Decatur was originally called Dawson’s Camp, was founded at the intersection of two Native American trails. It is named for American naval officer Stephen Decatur, who fought in the War of 1812. The city was incorporated in 1822, making this the oldest city in DeKalb County. It is a little city in and of itself; the quaint downtown is the main attraction, it is full of personality from the retro shops to the cool restaurants. Older brick homes, smaller bungalows and cottage homes are abundant types of Real Estate available in the area. Avondale Estates and Winnona Park are nearby communities. The City of Decatur and its consultants, Keystone Preservation and Morrison Design, completed the citywide historic resource survey in the Fall of 2009. The results of that survey were presented to the public and are available online. This comprehensive survey offers a wealth of information including maps of the each neighborhood. In light of the fact that Decatur is the oldest Atlanta neighborhood, the survey is one which cover a great deal of ground…literally.
